I have a volvo s40 but its iving me problems so i want to replace it for something a little sportier/nicer. My two first choices are a 2003/2004 Saab 9-3 or Alfa 156 but both are renowned for poor/patchy build quality, but they are so damn good looking!!

I really cant see anything in that segment that looks as good AND is reliable. People who drive BMWs have no imagination so i dont want one of them and they are too expensive second hand anyway.

Any ideas? No american brands please by the way cause you cant get them here anyway.

Its a 2001 s40 so its not as sporty as the new one. Within 1 week of buying it the engine was making this chattering sound and then started to shunt when the car was idling they replace something on the crankshaft(i think) and it went away. " days later it needed an oxygen sensor replaced. That was done and now the chattering and shunting of the engine has started coming back, i think i just got unlucky with the one i got.

I personally would go for the Audi A3. I don't know were you hail from, sounds like you are from Europe. I've been a Euro technician for years, and to me the Audi line-up represents the best on paper and in production. Their fuel injection systems are the highest evolved, and so are their tranny's In America, unfortunately, we can't get the A3 with diesel. I don't know exactly why. The DSG trans has no torque converter and responds quicker than a stick shift with fewer parts. What's wrong with your S40??? They beat most cars in reliability and sportiness, as well.
