When i turn the mic volume up using skype or ventrilo, i get severe feedback. I used the mic on another computer and it worked fine. I have updated sound drivers...what do you think the issue could be/do you need more information like a dxdiag or something?

This is a bit esoteric, but you might not be hearing feedback.
Check this: Plug some headphones in, and move them away from the mic.
Turn the volume up, and listen to the phones.
If you still hear "Feedback" it's not feedback.
You may be dealing with a very twitchy high gain microphone which is picking up and amplifying all those things your brain filters out, like your computer fan, and the traffic, and even wind....
Also.. and this happens all the time, you might be catching radio signals off the mic wire. It comes out sounding like garbage, unless you are unlucky in which case it comes out sounding like Randy Travis....

Try this.. Unplug the phones, crank up the volume, and make a cell phone call near the mic cable.

If you hear a DZZZ D-D-D-D DZZZZ DZZZZ. loud. like irritating loud, your cable is not shielded properly and you are piping stray signal.

Good Luck
