Never use a heat rock. These are notorious for malfunctioning and causing serious burns.

As suggested - a CHE, which is a lightless heat emitter, is excellent for night set-ups. Even the red lights at night can sometimes bother the reptile and can keep the temps too high. They do need to cool down at night - and some species actually do better with the very low temps. Not knowing what kind of reptile you have does not allow the right info on temps - so research where it needs to be and adjust accordingly with the heat device you choose.

If it is still dropping into the low to mid 60's even with the heat pad left on at night (Brrr! how cold is your house?! ) then you may need to invest in a ceramic heat emitter. You can leave it on for 24 hours without bothering your snake. They are a bit expensive but last for years. A cheaper alternative is a red light at night. You could try covering the cage at night to contain the heat produced by the pad alone but with those low temps that may not be enough.

Are u measuring the air temp or the cage floor temp? I discovered that there's a difference! lol Anyway, it might not be a bad thing if the temp drops some, since that's how it happens in nature. I used to worry about my son's gecko until I got a flat thermometer to check the sand temp... we don't use the red heat lamp as much now.

I use a night heat bulb (it's usually red in color) that I purchased at the pet store.
