My book is a paperback. He's brown-haired, has a pipe and a hat. On other editions I've seen it's always Dumbledore, but my guy's different - any ideas who he is?

He's just a generic wizard who was later replaced with a picture of Dumbledore. Here is the page of the Harry Potter Lexicon that contains pictures of the covers and explanations:

o ok lol i exchange into going to declare dumbledore without interpreting your question, yet i think of its hagrid, hagrid performs an important area in harry's existence in teh first e book so its a threat, he does have a brown beard and im uncertain with reference to the smoking, is he like particularly huge (huge huge)? has a brown coat and the completed bit??? if the character does then its prob hagrid

I've always wondered that too. They put Dumbeldore on all the later editions, but I haven't a clue who this guy is. Qurill maybe? Although, he wore a turban not a hat... hmm.
