All of them: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.

However gemstones in sedimentary rocks do not form in those rocks. They are included as a result of weathering out of other rocks.

Gemstones are like ores. Different ones are found in different contexts.

Even sedimentary rocks. I think of malachite and azurite immediately (these are copper minerals that are sometimes gemstones) that usually form from weathering of copper minerals. In some places (central african copperbelt for example) the weathering of copper mineralization in sedimentary rocks produces large amounts of this type of material.

igneous and metamorphic. I do not know of any in sedimentary(clay,sand,dirt)
