When you think about it this actually makes sense because we are products of our environment after all. Personally I wouldn't be very fond of something like this. Many other people are likely to agree. I hate it when my mother tells me that she was like me at my age. Obviously I'm not open to believing or accepting such a thing.
How likely is it for the offspring to take after the parents?

It is very likely, however the way we cope with that is often by greatly improving on the 'earlier model', and trying to become what we needed our parents to be.

In my case 0, nil, not possible. My Mom and Dad are Ultra conservative. My Dad would look for Red Dye #9, before he ate a gum ball. Check consumer reports first. I on the other hand, rip open a package, expired or not, and spit out some celaphane. I'm the risk taker. Jump an anthill on your bicycle?? Bring out a couple Power wheels. Make it interesting. YOU DON'T get your head above the crowd, unless you stick your neck out. It's NOT GETTING knocked down, it's how fast you get back up again. I love them, but I couldn't possibly be like them. They respect my tenacity. The generation gap is a hard thing to keep bounding over. Evil Knivel did busses. Why settle for ant hills?? Be your own person. I'm fired up on this one!! Dennis B.

it may be true but not reality
my mom sometimes tell me that but i know shes not cause i would have never some of the decisions shes made
but i know alot of people that are 1000% different then their parents and they do shape how your gonna be but that means alot of things, they could be a way and after you grow up with that and dont like it you make sure your not liek them or they could be good and you could choose to pick up some their traits. know what im saying

Very likely. And as you grow older you will catch yourself, as it slowly happens. Scary stuff! I think you would have to have a very strong desire, and the drive, to constantly keep yourself in check; if it were your wishes to be unlike your own parents.
Pretty tough to do.
p.s. I think you take your Mom's comments out of context. She is not saying that to hurt you! I would put money on the fact that the same words will one day come out of your mouth! Deny it now...but most likely it WILL happen!

The likely is very high unless you are going in therapy with the firm resolution that you will not repeat the pattern of your parents

I think while we get our parent's dna and attributes, their mannerisms

we get some of their life experience and choices thanks to being there

but later our experiences change and we have the free will to choose to do same or differently

we are wired to be like our parents and can get their diseases and 'ticks'

we can also reject it and re-invent ourselves

there are genetic and environmental influences for pretty much every facet of who we are so to an extent you are like your parents, but there are also many other factors that can change that.
