and it says something like 36 hours remaining...
can I pause that... log off the internet... then get back online later -like tomorrow and finish downloading..or will that mess it up?
i don't have the time to finish loading it now...my phone line is being tied up and i'd rather not let it remain that way for another 36 or so hours

Your still on dial up ouch. Get on broadband.
Right yes it will automatically resume whatever state you leave it in.
But it will take ages and ages.
