I all depends on how they are recharged. Batteries do not tend to contribute to greenhouse gases, however they do contain acid that can be harmful to the environment. If they ever come with rechargable solar battaries, that would our best invention. battaries rechargable by using solar energy.

Batteries do not release greenhouses gasses, however they should not be thrown in landfills, but disposed of at a battery recycling centre.
