Your positioning in the playoffs. In terms of football, the 3rd seed is the team with the third best record in the conference during the regular season. It means they will get home field for the first game of the playoffs, but none after and it means they would play the 6th seed in the first round, the second seed in the 2nd round and either the 1st, 4th, or 5th seed in the Conference Championship.

The 3rd seed in the NFL playoffs has the 3rd best record (after tie-breakers, if necessary) of the four division champions in the conference.
They do not get a bye, and they host the 6th seed (the 2nd wild card) in the first round of the playoffs.

The term seed means something like a ranking, usually in a tournament. For example, Geelong is a "1 seed" meaning that they are ranked first in their bracket and get to play the "8 seed" Adelaide. The origin of the term means that the teams are "planted" in the bracket as a certain rank, thus the term seed.

Seed is a fancy team term for place Like:
Dallas Cowboys is 1st seed in the NFC. That simply means they are in 1st place in the NFC.
The Green Bay Packers are the 2nd seed in the NFC. That means they are in 2nd place in the NFC.
All seed means is place: It is just a fancy four bit [ Blue Blood stuck up better than thou] word orginally used at the Country Clubs in tennis instead of place. is all.

It means the 3rd best record going into the play-offs for the AFC or NFC. It also means that they will play a wild card team instead of getting a bye week.
