Many schools require the GRE instead of the GMAT. In fact, when I got mine, I had to convince the school to accept the GMAT (which I had taken previously) in lieu of the GRE they required, because I was located out of range of test centers at the time I applied. If you want to avoid exams altogether, you may be out of luck.

You don't need a GMAT score to get into ANY PhD program in business. All of the good ones will accept the GRE.

No good programs will let you in without one or the other.

You should know that the better business PhD programs are notoriously hard to get into. When I got into Berkeley,they accepted nine students out of about 250 applications. Most of the other schools I applied to had similar numbers.

It is essential that you do well on the GRE.
