All the new freezers seem to have "oil free compressors". Since we're looking to buy a new freezer, I thought it would be helpful to know the difference.

That is news to me. Oil free compressors are generally found in the compressors use to compress air or industrial units, not residential units. Residential refrigerators and freezers use hermetically sealed, piston type compressors with valves that run off an electric motor. The bearings and other metal components are lubricated with oil that is contained within the refrigerant mix.

oil free uses a diffrent type of compressor, [heat exchange] the ones with oil usualy last longer,
