I'm writing a book at the moment and i'm 15 years old. i have to admit it's pretty difficult but i'm comfortable with the story and i think it can be a success. It's just sometimes my mind is taken over by other things and i get easily distracted. Sometimes i'm really not in the mood to write but this makes me depressed because i really want to get it finished in the next 8 months. I feel that I have to force myself to write. Should
I do this or wait until I'm in the right frame of mind or say write about a page a day or something? Does anyone know how successful writer do it?
PLease help!
Thanks for your answers :)

1) Forget timetables. Art isn't something that runs on a clock. As long as no one is giving you deadlines, don't impose them on yourself. Enjoy the freedom of being able to linger.

2) Stop writing and work on a serious detailed outline. Then go back and use it to keep yourself on track.

3) Learn to discipline yourself. Authors like Hemingway wrote in the same place at the same time of day for the same length of time. I follow that pattern myself. Find out what place is most comfortable for you and set yourself a time and schedule.

4) Authors never speak in terms of pages - use the number of words. If you are writing one page a day, I assume that is approximately 250 words. Gradually build up until you are writing a larger amount.

If you go to my profile, you will see I star all good Q and A on writing and publishing. Print out some you think will help you and study them.

Discipline takes time. I didn't drive in the Indy 500 the day I got my drivers' license. You are pushing yourself by jumping in with a novel at 15. You should master the short story first. You have to learn to crawl before you walk. If it is depressing you, put it aside for a while and focus on journaling or short stories. Writing a novel shouldn't cause that kind of depression. If you were in one of my classes, I would have you filling notebooks with thoughts right now. From what I see, you aren't ready for a novel. You need to learn to hone and train your writing skills first.

Here are some tips that helped me.

-Set aside some time during the day specifically for writing. I liked to write in the morning before school when my mind is the clearest. Even if you don't write anything it will help if your read what you have written.

-Used a plot chart. Write each important part of the story on a flash card and then hang them nearby while you write. This can also be used when you are making characters and scenery. It's also good because you can add and look up things you have forgotten.

- Read a lot and study the writing used. Learn about how people would react and make your charcters real.

-Ask yourself how you want your writing to be like. Do you was sparce details or descritive? Will you used irony or suspense or both? What is your genre?

These also might help:
-If you're in a block, write in a part you know. Book don't have to be written in order. Write the ending first if you want.
-Use adverbs sparesly.
-Avoid unnecesary details.

And if all else fails, just keep trying. The beauty of writing it that you can only get better at it.

Many writers use different approaches to writing and you will have to find the method that works best for you. If you feel that you are forcing yourself to write when you don't feel the words flowing, then you will end up with writing that is probably not your best effort.

As a writer (and I'm sure many other writers experience the same thing), there are times when I don't feel like writing or I don't have anything worthwhile to write. During these periods, I will not write anything or I may reread what I've already written. Then there are times when something will come to me and if I'm away from my computer, I'll jot down my thoughts to use later.

If you set aside some time to write each day and stick to that discipline, you may accomplish your goal. One thing you should do when you are in the mood and the words are flowing is to just write down whatever comes to you and don't worry about trying to correct mistakes or clean it up right then. Then, when you have those days when you can't think of anything, use that time to go back and proofread your work. You'll find that after doing that, you will have some new ideas to write down.

I hope this helps.

You're not alone. In fact, you're very normal.
I'm never in the mood to write when I start. It's not just a cliche that you just have to sit down and start writing. Most of what you initially write will not be the caliber of what you want to express, but soon your mood and imagination should kick in and ideas will surface. Remember that you will be editing your work several times before you're satisfied with it and that's the reason for the delete key.
Set aside a time of day or evening and plow through for an hour or two.

Good luck ☺

Hey! My name is Ria and i am 16 and also writing a book. I currently am putting together piece by piece on my laptop. I have to admit as well it is difficult to put everything together. I write different scenes at a time and try to put everything together so it flows. But whats important for writers is that you write when you are in the mood and when you feel inspiration from a certain place. Write when you feel like it so it comes out how you want. Dont force yourself to write and make sure you know your characters and setting. I recommend that you live the character and be your characters for a day. If someone were to ask you a question about what happened in a certain part of your story that was hidden make sure you know the answer. Like lets say you introduced a character in one part and they were not really developed in the story. It would be good to know why that character was there and who it was even though it was not as important. Good Luck with your book. I hope you really get to know your story and actually get in the mood before you write. =)
