I just bought a nice 95 BMW 525i. I love it but can't figure out why there is not a bit of heat. When I start it the dashboard warning system says "coolant level" and "owners manual." But the coolant level is fine. I can't tell if the coolant is circulating, but it seems like the water pump must be fine, otherwise it would overheat. The temp gauge stays glued to the halfway mark. Anyone have any suggestions?
thanks a lot,
Scott

You have two separate faults.

The coolant level sensor is bad. They fail all the time. Get a new one.

No heat could be several problems.

Does any air come out of the vents? If not is the fan running? No fan -- Bad blower motor final stage.
Fan runs, no air --> Clogged microfilter.

Lots of cold air? The first thing I'd check is the boost pump. There is an electric pump that circulates water up to the heater radiator. If that appears to be working, then the valves aren't opening on the heater radiator. There are two separate valves, one for each side. Look for a bad ground or a blown fuse.

If you had heat I would say that you just have a bad coolant level sensor. But without heat you could have a bad heater core or at least a blockage somewhere in the system that would trigger the warning light. Another thing to check out is the thermostat, it could be sticking.

You might have an 'air lock' situation....start the car up with the system being open...Let it reach nomal operating temperature and then you might see the coolant go down a bit to compensate for the air pocket...just top it off and it should be fine..Make sure your blower motor w/heat on while warming it up....

could be some air in the system. no heat could be not enuf coolant,a clogged or dirt heater core. check the lines for the heater core for heat and water,[watch out for water spray when you pull it]. if you got it then you need to have the motor flushed.

You have air in your system and you need to bleed it out.

Next to the radiator filler, there is a plastic bleeding screw. With the engine cold, start the engine and undo this screw until coolant runs out of it. Then close it back.

You may need to top up your coolant after this process and repeat...

If this doesn't solve it, the next item you should look at is the thermostat.
