I love the Andruw Jones signing, especially because of the shortness of the contract. Thank God we're not giving another post-prime player 90 years and $20 billion.

Kuroda is as good as anything you could get domestically without giving up players.

Loney and Kemp combined for .336/25/109 in 194 games and could only get better.

And you've gotta love anyone who isn't Grady Little managing the team. Joe Torre? Even better.

But something is still missing. And I'm not just talking a couple more arms in the bullpen, a utility guy, or a journeyman pinch hitter, all things which should fall into place soon.

If you were GM of the Dodgers, what's the one big move you'd make before April?

I live in Southern Cali about an hour from LA. So we have a lot of Dodger fans out here. When we signed Torre, a lot of people were like..."we're in now".

That shows me that most of them know nothing about baseball.

Why?

Joe Torre is a great manager. But he became great because Steinbrenner had a budget that made his teams amazing. Any manager can coach a team full of perennial all stars and find some form of success. Yet I doubt Torre is going to grab a glove and bat and be the hardcore 3rd baseman LA needs.

Andruw Jones is a solid pickup. It shocked me they worked the money to get him. It's probably the biggest name in LA since Kent came over. The deal with Druw is...can we get him to hit 30 HR's and keep an average that isnt in the low 200's?

They made some improvements over the last couple of years in the middle infield. Since Ive been alive, the Dodgers had a mediocre middle infield since they last won the World Series.

What the Dodgers really need is solid corners, and another strong bat in the outfield. They tried small ball the past couple of years...and guess what? it didnt work.

They had their most success with power hitting. Karros and Piazza in the mid 90's.

They have Kent who is aging. Nomar who was never a huge home run hitter. So Andruw is a start...but who is next?

My idea was to take a hit at maybe Eric Chavez, even Pedro Feliz who is still on the market. A strong third baseman has been a factor for the Dodgers since they let Beltre walk.

They can alternate first...Loney is solid, so is Nomar and Kent.

All I do know is...it will only get better. They let go of DePodesta, so I at least know we'll have a lot of the same guys for more than a season or two.

It's not something missing. It's something that is there: the "curse of the sleeve". From 1952 to 1996 the look of the Dodgers' home uniform never changed. Blue lettering on white jersey, with red numbers below the blue "Dodgers" on the front. Then, beginning in 1997, they put a big "LA" on the left sleeve of the home jersey. They haven't been to the World Series since. Hire a seamstress with a big seam ripper and get rid of the curse!

I agree with the others. If we could get one more quality pitcher, that would be great. However, I don't think that's possible without giving up a couple of young players.

I do understand what you're saying though, it feels like something besides a pitcher is still missing.

Dominant pitcher?

Once Jason Schmidt comes back, Brad Penny will be their #2, and his ERA was 3.03 and allowed only 9 home runs!

He was one of few starters in MLB to throw more innings than hits allowed (208/199) and Schmidt's last healthy year he had opponent batting average of .238 and 1.26 WHIP.

Dodgers don't need hitting, but they do need someone to step up offensively and be the team leader and be a leading offensive force in every stat category.

Bring back the spirit that drove the teams of the 70's--Garvey, Lopes, Russell, & Cey...as well as that of the 50's Dodgers--Campy, Pee Wee, Hodges, Robinson, Newk, & Snider.
