It seemed like a pretty reasonable question to me. I'm not sure what Maud's problem is.

Everything I've read (as some of the respondents have mentioned) suggests that sociopathy is incurable.

As a student nurse on psych secondment I got to meet a nice young guy who was diagnosed as a sociopath, or to have a sociopathic disorder. Anyway, he was actually in a mental hospital at the time but I understand that his condition was untreatable and that generally they are not hospitalised for this condition. I don't know why he was there, but I was warned to be very carefull with him as sociopaths tend to be very, very manipulative, very clever and have no ability to feel guilt. Where as guilt or conscience would stop you from hurting some one a sociopath has no such constraints on their behaviour. To me he seemed like a perfectly nice young man.

They don't respond to treatment. If you knew anything about psychiatry or psychology you'd already know that.

They don't respond to treatment because they're perfect in their own eyes.....it's other people who have the problem. There is your starting point........now do you still want to counsel them? Think before you answer for fear of looking like a fool.

I have lived with one and they wreck lives. They are less than human.

Have you ever lived with one? If you had you wouldn't be asking this question.

All the programs I have seen basically say there is no effective treatment. There is damage to the amygdala that we haven't figured out how to correct. it is an organic defect for many of them. No, a person that is not certified should not be trying to treat them.

If you did counsel someone, and they took your advice and something illegal or life threatening happened, you could possibly be held legally liable for any damages.

Being a counselor, etc is something one should be educated for, and it is not something for a lay person to mess with.

there are more than a million, the real ones are the ones that don't assume they are sociopaths
