Iowa and New Hampshire pick their party's candidates before anyone else...traditionally. Iowa, instead of a primary, has caucuses, where people talk about who they want to support and vote with everyone in the group knowing and trying to convince everyone else. So political candidates want to get to know Iowans and gain their personal support.

It is the first state voting on the candidates, and the winner will get a huge boost. If Edwards comes in third in Iowa, he is finished. If Romney wins in Iowa, he could easily win NH next, and do very well in SC. That would make him the clear front-runner, and Giuliani would be in deep trouble.

The problem with allowing small states like Iowa and NH to have so much power over who becomes the GOP and Dem candidate is that they do not reflect the diversity of race and ethnicity of all Americans. It is clearly wrong to allow any two states to have so much more power than all of the other states in selecting presidential candidates every four years.

There are still a lot of people who haven't decided which candidate for whom to vote. Many of them will simply watch who wins the early primaries/caucuses and go with the leader so as to feel like they're voting for the winner, rather than voting for who actually most closely matches their own beliefs.
