I think it is mostly hair and I really don't like using a lot of chemicals in the house.

Unscrew the drain plate and use a coathanger or other stiff wire to pull out the gunk. Won't be pleasant, but it works. This is assuming you have a shower drain that is fastened down with screws. I have hard water, so I have to periodically take mine off and scrape the sides to let it drain properly, and remove excess hair then too

Unfortunately, hair is not soluble in most "uncloger" substances. Go to big box store, plumbing section, purchase a plastic device (don't recall the name) which is a strip about 18" long, and has short "barbs" on two sides. Very inexpensive. Remove (usually unscrew) the tub stopper. Stick the plastic device into the drain and move in/out several times. Pull the device out and hair will be hung on the barbs. Repeat until no more hair can be harvested. Finish with liquid drain cleaner. Don't use lye (Drano), as it will remove the chrome finish from metal parts. Replace the stopper. Set your calendar to repeat every three months.

At my place, we have a cool little instrument that you stick down a drain, push the end, and it causes several wires to fan out of the opposite end. Then, you just pull it out of the drain, bringing up of the disgusting hair with it. I don't remember where we got it, but probably a hardware store.

I realize that you don't like using a lot of chemicals, some of the chemicals, such as, vinegar should be okay. Try it. Subsequently, use a plunger. For me, bleach and then plunger worked.

Gonna stink but no chemicals.......pour baking soda down the drain then pour vinegar down will foam and bubble but will clean it out. Will help with hair and if you have lime or calcium build up to.

The easiest way I have found is to take a cup of baking soda and dump it down your drain, leave it for ten minutes and then dump boiling hot water down!! Clears it right up!!
