your best bet is to keep a clean air filter in it
you may also choose to buy a K&N air filter these have almost no resistance and will pay for themselves after a couple of weeks

Trade it in on something more fuel efficient. Seriously though, make sure that your engine is running at the proper temperature. There is a limited range of optimum running. Make sure your thermostat and fan switch ro functioning correctly. Try using either Bosch single-point platinums or Iridium plugs. They will improve engine efficiency and increase power as well.

Make sure to keep your tires at, or a little above, what Ford recommends (this will be listed on a sticker inside your door pannel). High rolling resistance from underinflated tires kills your gas mileage (and if you let it get too low, you risk a blowout like on those older Ford Explorers)

keep it tuned-up every 2yrs[wires,plugs, ect..] i try to change the oxy.sensor and intake[or map depending on the system] every other time i touch the plugs. check the tires too, keep them at 32psi. a k&n airfilter will give you alittle more power but i'm not sure about the mpg.
