There are a lot of things one can do to have good luck at the start of the year. First, one can throw coins over their windows or spread them all over your house. The point over that belief is that you will get rich. Although this other belief is not popular, the act of taking a bath, some say, would bring good luck. Taking a bath before the clock strikes twelve allegedly washes the bad luck, one obtained from the previous year, down the drain. Of course we all know that in the end we are the one that controls our lives, it would not hurt if we added some extra luck in it.

I've never heard of anything to bring luck on NYE but my family always followed the tradition of eating black eyed peas (for luck) and cabbage (for money) on New Year's Day, to bring those things during the year ahead. I'm not sure if that's a southern thing or wider than that...such superstitions will vary.

There was also an old wives tale to not do laundry on New Year's Day or there'd be a tragedy during the year. My great grandmother bucked that tradition and lost 3 children the following year...I don't buy into superstition, but most of my family since that time were strict about not doing laundry on that day (after that).

I've been told that for good luck in the new year you must leave your christmas tree up until after the first day of the new year. Also, it is tradition in the south to eat a dish called Hoppin' John for luck.

Run around in circles 3 times. Drink 10 bud light beer. Jump up and down chanting "Bush has AIDES" for 10 seconds. Sit back and relax.

Bingo. Luck for 2008. Really works.

Good luck just happens, there's no magic potion. I once talked to a very religious lady when visiting her flag shop in Ohio about "good luck." She said there's no such thing as "good luck" that it's God's will when good things happen. Not sure what to think about it, since I refer to being lucky because of this & that.
