My parents learned different subjects in school which are almost never taught today. For example, my parents had to take Latin in high school. I don't know of many schools that teach that subject anymore. Other classes they took were in penmanship and my father took a class in learning how to use a slide rule because he was studying civil engineering. When I was in high school, we had no computers in school. We barely even had calculators and many teachers did not allow them to be used in class. In my four years of high school, I only had to take one math class. My daughter has to take at least four of them. In my day, most advanced math classes were electives and were generally only taken by those who were either geniuses or planning to pursue engineering careers. I had to take PE every single year from seventh grade until I graduated.. My daughter has to only take one class. I can't say for sure if my parents had it better or if I did. The way I see it is that times have changed and what was relevant some 70 years ago or even 30 years ago is not necessarily so today.

First let me say this is a loaded question? I believe that Education was better in the year that pass. I believe that in the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. that Colleges and Universities has a better number of professors who taught students a much greater number of course with a knowledge way on looking at things. Their were less students who were able to get into the college programs and fewer student who were able to pay for the cost of a college education. Also I believe that even the HS and Grade school it was the same as in the colleges.

I think the current educational system is better off when it comes to providing diversity and cross-cultural awareness courses. However, university faculty members are conditioned to cater to the student body rather than weeding the weak student's out of the student population.
We are also witnessing a couple of trends known as "degree inflation" and "underemployment." Although a college education is still considered valuable, a bachelor's degree does not hold the same value as it did twenty years ago.

The quality of education today stinks. There are high school graduates that cannot read or write. They can't fill out a job application. When our parents went to school they didn't have social promotion. You either learned the material or you stayed until you knew the material.

Now after 911 things have got worse with the political desicions like immigration.Latinos and ppl with no passport are being refused to get a proper education. And there has been a lot more drugs and killing.
our parents generation was way better than the one that we have today

I was going to give you a link to the footage of ABC's '20/20 Stupid in America' but I see it has been pulled. Nevertheless, ABC News related report will go a long way towards answering your question.
