I'm looking towards the likes of a Douglas Adams HGTTG or the Terry Pratchett Discworld novels. Nothing too in depth or seriously philosophical.

Comedic adventure I guess you could call them.

Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson is adventure/comedy/sci-fi, and it's also literary; it was an assigned book in my college lit class (the professor also assigns HGTTG for her students). It's not only hilarious, but he creates a really interesting world. It was written in late-80s/early-90s, but it would still be considered ahead of its time if it was written now.

Try Robert Heinlein's JOB : a comedy of manners or perhaps his Number of the beast you will not be able to put them down and will laugh your a** off almost constantly . Afterwords you might end up reading all his books by personal choice . Also David Drakes all the way to the gallows is freakin hilarious !
