I recently purchased an item and made payment via bank transfer.
The only details that i had was bank account number and sort code (UK bank)

But i have not recieved the item and the seller is not responding to emails or phone calls.

Is there any way i can trace the person ? , I contacted my bank but they said the Data Protection Act protects the seller.

via ebay or something? you should have used paypal

such fraud people will insist on a bank transfer , and unless I know the person well I wouldn't trust em

you might be able to trace them ,but they may have long since done a runner.

get the police involved if you feel that way. they have access to records.

Try to get the police involved or a solicitor for a Court Order to make them disclose the details required. I can not believe that the Data Protection Act will protect a fraudster

yes sorry he bank would be liable for prosecution if they gave you these details although they really would prefer to help you if they could. The police are the only peolpe would can obtain this information and even they have to submit numerous forms to the bank. If it is a large amount then the police may be your best and only course of action.

You could contact the bank from the sort code and ask them on your behalf to contact the other person otherwise report to the police

although the bank cant disclose information,I think they have some obligation to do something, even contact the seller themselve's on your behalf.if your in the UK,go to the CAB,if oversea's then you may have some organisation to advise you of your rights, and what action to take.

data protection does not protect fraud ...if you feel it is serious enough report it to the police....trading standard may help if they have knowledge of the person.

where did you buy it from? and you should never do it like that.... always do it through a secure site...like amazon or paypal.
