I am going to college next year at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. I went to highschool at a decent private school in Mississippi and will graduate with roughly a 97 average.

I would really like to become a physician but it seems like a nearly impossible path with all the tests, studying, etc. If I made good grades in highschool, will I most likely make good grades in college if I put in the time and effort?

I know this sounds like a stupid question but I have been worried lately for some reason.

Like others have said a major reason that college study is difficult is because of the freedom you have. You have a goal and that is awesome because you can focus on that and know what you have to do.

Attendance is the absolute key to college success, I have had a few professors who give A's to the students who attend every class session, because that rarely happens. I have also had professors who say they don't care if you come to class as long as you do the work and tests. Regardless of what they say GO TO EVERY CLASS. Only miss class for illness and not because you are tired or looking for fun. Have a blast when you can but class time is class time and schedule study and work time as well.

Get to know your profs, go ask questions during office hours, develop a relationship with them to where they know your name, it makes all of the difference. Since you are considering Medical School take multiple courses with the profs you like so that when the time comes for letters of reference for med school they will be happy to do so.

The fact that you are nervous shows that you care, and that is a good sign. You will do great if it is what you truly want to do. A vast majority of people don't lead the lives they want because they did not focus on their goals, you know what you want so go for it and don't let any test or person tell you otherwise.

Good Luck, and always remember to GO TO CLASS

College is totally a different beast than high school; since you are going to Millsaps, which is not a very competative college, if you study hard enough, it won't be hard to pull straight A with a few B's. You would need to study way more than you did in high school, on your own schedule.

And also it largely depends on how you compare with the rest of the Millsaps population. If you were admitted as a top tier student, then you should have no problem. If you barely sneaked into Millsaps, you probably would struggle.

Good luck

You may do fine, but it is not a given. Generally, students who do well in high school because they have developed mature study skills can apply these in college and do well. Those who do well in high school because they are just bright and able to skate by without doing much work, may find in college that those strategies don't work for them. I've also found some who did fine in college but, upon getting into graduate or professional school, suddenly have to study and are unable to meet the challenge. All is not lost if you fit into the category of the skaters, however. If you recognize early that what you did before will not work for you in college, you can adapt to the new situation and do fine. It is only those who make the assumption that they can easily transfer old habits who have trouble.

Not nescessairly, Have not gone to college yet, but I've been asking the same questions and the response I have gotten so far is that it is not the work in college that is difficult, but the time management part. Without parents telling you when to study and when you can go out, you will be entirely in control of your own life. Once you learn how to manage your time, you should be fine

The fact that you are a little nervous is a good sign. Success in college is what separates the boys from the men. No one looking over your shoulder, asking you what you do, who you are with, and how you organize your time. Don't think about the years of school or tests, one semester at a time...
Good luck.

It all depends. Your first year of college is when most people "mess up" you party, you drink you explore. it's common, but if you focus on what you wanna do, which is becoming a physcian (kudos to you! :), you need to find your balance between work and play. I did well in high school, very well If i have to toot my own horn, I messed up my first year do to a) My lazzyness, I no longer had parents to ride my behind, b)partying like a rockstar, c)i was living out of state..So dont be like me, a year behind due to it.

if you dont get caught up in the "newness"of college you should do fine. Make a plan on how to manage your time well. from my experience time management is key to doing well.
