My coworker is white and of Dutch decent. He came into work today and out of nowhere stated that "black people are the ones who should be faulted for slavery; since they entrapped their own people and sold them to the whites." His comment came out of nowhere. I'm extremely offended by his comment but I'm not sure what to say.

If there is one thing that I can not stand, it is when people talk about different races, ethnicity, etc. I get offended by what people say because there is no way of people being able to generalize one group. My advice to you is to either ignore your co worker or tell him that you feel uncomfortable with the comment that he said. Good luck.

Some of the slave trade had to do with tribal people trading slaves to white slavers. So far as my moral math goes one sin doesn't excuse another. If this is the only thing said, he may just be a fool, there are a LOT of fools out there. I would tell him that what he said was ignorant and racist. If he keeps it up tell a supervisor since that kind of stuff isn't aloud at work.

Say nothing, don't get involved with the subject, even if it was the Dutch slave traders who started trading slaves to Englishmen for food then continued the practice in North America region of Canada then went south to the southern plantations owners of the U.S. Confederacy.

he was kind of right, what he said. and dont get mad becasue i'm totally on your side, but in the beginning of slave trade, the rich black people sold others into slavery. it wasn't common and it stopped. arabs took over the slave trade. the arabs began to ship over seas. now know that there is absolutly no racism in my body, my father is a quarter black, french, american indian, and dutch, my mother is hungarian, irish, and polish. so i am quite the mutt. but anyway what he said was probably in an offensive manner, which is why i am on your side. but you need to be the bigger perosn here. just kindly let him know that what he said was very offensive to you, very rude, and ask him to never brign it about again. and ask for an apology. i wish you the best of luck, i know what it feels like to be offended bacause of race, basically any racsit jokes apply to me. happy new year to you. =]

First off, let me say that what he said is not only incorrect but it also illegal to be repeating at work. This is a form of harassment and you really need to talk to your supervisor about this. Harassment is defined in the work place as "any situations whether verbal, written, or otherwise directed at you to you or about you, that causes you to feel uncomfortable with that person." I was a supervisor for several different companies and had to go through harrassment training. It does not necessarily have to be sexual to be considered harrassment. Go talk to your supervisor asap.

Realistically, it's better just to say nothing, maybe stop talking to him casually for a while or if it continues, stop talking altogether. Trying to change him or confront him will probably be more trouble than it's worth.

And also, he sounds like a jerk anyways, so he'll probably get lots of problems from other people.

Ask your boss to have a word with him. He is completely out of order, and it will definitly be against company policy.

If that fails, you are perfectly obliged to take it further legally.

For free legal advice, wonder into your local police office and ask at the front desk for advice.

Call him on his behaviour.
Tell him straight out that what he said was offensive and completely uncalled for!
Make sure you do it in front of other people, especially if he made this comment in front of others.
He needs to be shamed into realizing that he needs to keep his mouth shut and his beliefs to himself.
Remember, if you don't speak up against it, you look like you are for it...........

Africans did indeed entrap and sell other Africans to foreign traders. It was more widespread than Europeans going into Africa and capturing them themselves.

To a certain degree he is correct. He was not blaming the slaves. Sounds to me like he was blaming the slave traders.
