Hi,

1) Five times the first of three consecutive even integers is fourteen more than three times the second. What is the third consecutive integer?
5x = 14 + 3(x+ 2)
5x = 14 + 3x + 6
2x = 20
x = 10 as the first even integer
12 would be 2nd so 14 is the third consecutive even integer.

2) Martha and Sally had lunch together on Tuesday. Sally paid $2 more than Martha. If the total bill was $5.64. How much did Sally pay for her lunch?

x+ 2 + x = 5.64
2x = 3.64
x = 1.82

Sally paid $3.82

1) let the three consecutive even integers be: 2x, 2x+2, 2x+4
Then set-up your equation as:
5(2x) = 3(2x+2)+14
=> 10x = 6x + 20
=> 4x = 20
=> x = 5

Your third integer is 2x+4, plug in x, and you get 14 :)
***
Steve A expressed the integers as x, x+2, x+4. This is wrong because these integers can be odd, say when you substitute 1, you get 1, 3, 5. You should make it 2x to ensure that it's even. I checked my answer and it's correct :)

2) S = M+2
S+M is the total bill which is 5.64
Express this as M+2+M = 5.64
=> 2M = 3.64
=> M = 1.82
S = M+2 = 3.82

Sally paid $3.82

the consecutive even integers can be shown as x, x+2 and x+4
5*x = 14 + 3(x+2)
5x = 14 + 3x + 6
2x = 20
x = 10
so the three consecutive even intergers are 10, 12, 14
check
5*10 = 14 + 3*12 = 14 + 36 = 50
checks

Martha = m
Sally = s
m + s = 5.64
s = m + 2
m + (m + 2) = 5.64
2m = 3.64
m = 1.82
s = 2 + 1.82 = $3.82

x = 1st integer
x+2 = 2nd integer
5x = 3(x+2)+14
5x = 3x+6+14
2x= 20
x = 10
x+4 = 14 = 3rd integer

x = Martha's payment
x+2 = Sally's payment
2x+2 = 5.64
2x = 3.64
x = 1.82
x+2 = $3.82 = Sally's payment

1) x(x+2+x+4+x+6) = 3(x+4) +14
Thats my equation, don't completely trust me though, i think its wrong!

2) x + 200 + x = 564
2x = 364
x = 364/2

This one is right for sure =P
