In any state in the U.S., you must go to a four year college, take the LSAT exams to qualify you for Law School. Depending upon your LSAT score depends upon which Law School will admit you. After you finish three years of Law School, you study for the Bar and this should be taken in the state you wish to practice law in. It is a long road, not easy, and one must be dedicated to make it work, as well as have good academic skills. I have never heard of anyone receiving a law degree without going to college first.

I can't find any information anywhere about Illinois specifically which suggests that you can become a lawyer without going to law school. Even in states in which law school is not a requirement, graduation from college usually is.

To those who responded to your question as it if were a given that you have to go to law school, it is true that in some states, it is possible to become an attorney by studying under the tutelage of a judge or a law firm, rather than going to an actual law school. That is the case in California, and I have actually met one person who became a lawyer that way. To do so, you must study (not just work) in the law firm or judge's chambers for at least 18 hours/week, directly supervised for at least 5 hours a week by the judge or attorney, for 24 weeks. You have to be tested monthly, and regular reports on your progress need to be filed. You have to take the exam known as the "Baby Bar" which is also required of those who go to non-ABA-accredited law schools. To do this, you need to have completed at least the equivalent of two years of college. And, having said all of that, the vast majority of such candidates (although there are very few of them) fail the Bar. The other possibility in California is a correspondence school, which requires 864 hours of study (and passed courses) per year for four years. Again, the Baby Bar is necessary.
