Could they be made out of pewter? If not, what was the most common metal bullets were made out of?

you have some wrong answers here. Nails and such were used in cannon, not shoulder arms. The bullets wer made of lead, most often musket balls, but some of the patriots used hunting rifles. They were much more accurate.

Mostly lead, but back then all they had were muzzle loading muskets and they fired balls, not bullets. During the american revolution, soldiers would use nails and anything else they could stuff into the barrell in the place of their regular ammunition.

Lead was the most commonly used because of it's low melting temp.and it was easily made into ball's over a campfire
