...that it may be just selfish and wasteful? I appreciate the fact that large family units, farmers and people doing moving, hauling etc. need larger vehicles, but too often I see solo individuals driving these monster vehicles and I wonder why given the cost of gas, the need to improve the environment etc., these vehicles are everywhere. If you go to an urban or suburban shopping mall, the number of these oversized vehicles is staggering. I often feel that these indiviuals are more aggressive on the road given the size of the vehicles they drive. Could there be some compensation mechanism going on due to feelings of inferiority or smallness in other areas? PS I know this goes against the Amercan mania for owning bigger and bigger cars. Nor I am not a displaced flower child, an environmental freak or even a bleeding heart liberal. I am a conservative republican on most matters, but having all of these big cars seems wasteful and destructive to our society.

Obviously people who are very tall will fall into the category of needing a larger car. Most of the SUV/ Hummer drivers I see driving around by no means fall into that excepted category. I see a lot of petite women drving them as well.

I absolutely agree with you. I think some people who buy these large over sized gas guzzling SUV's and trucks like to feel powerful. I mean if I were driving a large gas guzzling SUV down the street while everyone else around me were driving cars I'd feel pretty powerful myself! I simply don't see the need for anyone to have a large SUV or a truck unless like you stated they have large families or they have to move large equipment often otherwise I think they only have it for show!

SUV drivers are people who are scared of other cars and scared of driving. Having and SUV gives them comfort that they have a bigger car than the other drivers. This is why SUV drivers always seem to have no idea what they are doing and cause so many accidents.

Mike is full of sh$t, I'm 6'4 and 240 something pounds and I have no problem getting in and out of most cars as well as having no problem driving them. The only problem are getting in and out of those really small cars that are real close to the ground but they are fine driving

Very true. I grew up on a rural farm and a truck was a needed tool for many of our tasks. Now, living in a suburban setting, a large vehicle would occasionally be useful, but a waste otherwise.

The same arguments apply to pushing for fuel cell technology and infrastructure. I'd buy a fuel cell in a heartbeat if the infrastructure was there.

If they can afford to buy them and pay the fuel bills it is nobody's business. I drive an SUV because my husband and I travel around the country for his work. We need the room to carry all our luggage and his tools. We tried it in a small car and there was not enough room plus we both ended up with back problems. I like my SUV because I am high enough to see what is happening down the road. I feel like I am on a skateboard in a low car and feel safer in my truck. And to the guy above me I have not had an accident in all my years of driving. I am afraid yes of stupid people who think they are the only ones on the road.

I'm six and a half feet tall. SUVs and trucks are the only vehicles that take people of my height into consideration. But thanks for calling me selfish and alluding to my manhood because I want to be able to drive without getting a sore neck. I appreciate that.
