1998 Fort Escort.

Its not the thermostat - just replaced that two months ago.

It works only *sometimes*

I can feel heat wanting to come out of the vents, but the blowers don't come on.

Very seldomly, it will work for like ten minutes or so, then shuts off on its own.

What is it?

Sounds like worn brushes on the blower motor. Put the switch for the fan on highest setting and tap on the blower fan or housing which is usually on the passenger side under the dash. If it starts working it's probably the fan motor that needs replacing. If the motor keeps running at lower speeds you don't have problems with the fan resistor that controls the speeds.

Will the blower work with the control on AC and fan on high? If so then look at a clogged heater core, If not you may need a new blower motor or fuse or relay bad going to the blower motor.

Look at your blower motor> If it works at all< IT IS NOT the fuse. More likely a bad motor[ blower]. I am sure oit is not the heater core, from what you say. Good luck.
