Do you also happen to have a mystery (apple) snail in the tank? These lay their eggs outside the water: http://www.dlink.org/aqua/image/snail_w_eggs.jpg

It may be flies, hard to believe but flies like to lay their eggs in moist environments and the underside of your fish tank lid is perfect for it. The eggs tend to be white to creamy white and kind of elongated ovals and if you push on it they will break apart into tiny segments.
