I have a 96 Jeep Cherokee and about a year ago, it would surge and buck when I put in the regular unleaded. I have to get High Octane and it runs fine. It didn't really concern me but now I want to sell it, so I need to fix this problem. Any idea what is wrong with it? How do I fix it?

Yes, I ran the cleaner thru it. I can't remember if this started before or after my last tune up. I am going to do another tune up before I put it for sale but then I will have to put cheap gas in to make sure it fixed it and if it did not fix it, then I would be stuck.

You engine is pinging/knocking. This happens when gasoline is not completely burned during the power portion in a 4-stroke engine.

Since higher octane fuel is made for high compression engines, it's highly unlikely that you have lost compression in the motor so it's probably nothing too serious.

However, you should have your engine looked at. It could be dirty spark plugs (a dirty spark plug will cause an incomplete burn) or the valves may need to be adjusted.

There's no reason for you to run higher octane (and much more expensive) gasoline in a Jeep motor. Jeep motors are designed to run on low octane gasoline.

I dont think that cheap gas would make the car buck like that. Depending on where you live the car might have water in the fuel tank. If the check engine light is on you may have a bad engine sensor. This could be making the computer mix the air and gas wrong which will make the engine skip. Also try changing the fuel filter.

I'm no expert... but what have you tried doing? Have you tried putting in some Octane cleaner (whatever its called) in your gas tank? Have you tried changing the gas filter? When is the last time you gave it a tune up? How many miles are on it?
Your not getting gas from the same place all the time, are you?

The 87 octane gas should burn better than 93 octane. The higher the octane the more additive to stop pinging or pre-ignition. You need maintenance, not more expensive gas!

May just need to run a good fuel cleaner in it. Or may be time to get a tune up and have the timeing checked an may be reajusted.

if its got to the point that it wont run good on it any more, then you need a tune up,as the plugs get mileage on them the gap in them gets bigger, and this makes them not burn the gas as good, probably a good tune up will make it run a lot better and allow you to use what gas you want to in it,good luck with it.

change your fuel filters and clean the fuel tank out may have rust and water in it debries of any kind will disrupt fuel flow the hi octain is able to get thru and burn because its more explosive and needs less of it

When did you last get a tune-up?

You should also have a diagnostic machine test.
