I am surprised that CNN would state that children as young as 7 were being sold into marriage. Under Islamic law a girl cannot be given as a wife until after she has had her mensus (first period), and that is usually from 9 to around 12 in Afghanistan. That is the same in most Islamic countries and is common in many African countries, both Muslim and Non-Muslim.
A women throwing herself onto a funeral pyre (in Afghanistan) is not an Islamic custom. That is an Indian HINDU custom.
Horrible things happen in all countries of the world.
Girls as young as 5 are kidnapped or sold into slavery and prostitution (oral sex at that age) in most countries. Also, many more girls as young as 8 are kidnapped and/or sold into slavery and especially prostitution (all forms of sex) in all countries.
Girls from Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, China, Cambodia and even Burma are found in brothels in Cambodia and Thailand.
Girls from Mexico and other South American countries, plus many from Easter Europe (mostly mid-teens) are found in brothels all over the US and some of the younger ones from Mexico etc operate as sex-slaves in open 'corn-field' brothels in Texas, California etc.
Girls (usually mid-teens and older) from Eastern Europe are found in Western Europe and Britain forced to work as sex slaves.

I am sorry you are upset. I will give you some advice: DONT watch CNN. They on-purpose air distorted and emotional material. It is NOT news...it is a distortion to create exactly the bad feelings you have.
some of their "news" has been shown to be staged, especially from muslim areas.
Yes, I am sure horrible things are happening. But you must know that this is true EVERY where. Terrible things happen right here in the USA. The best thing you can do is to make sure nothing awful happens to anyone YOU know. take care of your own corner of the world.

Afghanistan.
I don't know where you are from, but I think outside involvement is a very serious thing. Look at what it has done to most of the world. People need to bring themselves out of this situation. It is tough to stand by and watch, but look at what is happening in Iraq. You can't force a system of governance on people who don't know anything about it or want it. What Afghanistan and other countries in similar situations need is for their educated people to stay there and help work things out, and stop leaving for western europe and the US or Canada. I can't blame them for it, but it is really hurting their homeland.

To understand another culture is sometimes baffling. Fortunately, women here in America are different than Afgani women. If I were Afgani, I would have thrown myself on the funeral pyre, as I am a widow. Sold into marriages???? You mean, sold into slavery...a woman who marries for money alone is selling herself into slavery.
Our government can do very little if anything to help these unfortunates. It is their customs and traditions that need to be changed, and that may take a long time.

I don't know enough about the situation. We don't have CNN here. From what I do know about their culture it is very differnent from ours. Personally I wouldn't like to live there. There is something that must be done though. It not fair that some people have to live with fear and grief.
