Unlike other posters, I'm going to assume you're a sensible woman who did all the required steps to conceive, by some means or another.
Pregnancy tests vary in their effectiveness, and while most advertise on the packet that they're effective even before your period is due, I've heard plenty of experiences of women getting a negative test, then a week later another test gives a positive.
I found this myself with my first child. With a test that should theoretically work more than a week before my period was due, testing only two days before my period was due, I got a negative. But a few days later I got a positive! So yes, it can happen. I'd say my advice is to wait until your period is due....but....I know the excitement and anticipation can be too much! So, test all you want, but do follow up with another test a couple of days after your period is due, if you don't start bleeding when expected. BTW, first morning urine is the best to test with (as it has the highest concentration of hormones).
About 50% of straight couples who are TTC (trying to conceive) will achieve a pregnancy within the first 3 months of trying. So, its not unusual to not conceive in the first month.
If you want to increase your chances of conception, it's a good idea (if you're not doing this already) to learn about your cycle length, and calculate your peak fertility times. Your ovulation is due approximately 14 days before your period. Depending on how variable your cycles are, and what resources you have available, TTC starting 5 days before this date, to 2 days after this date (to allow for a bit of error). If you have limited sperm available, aim to TTC 1-2 days before your ovulation is due. There are plenty of books, websites, and charting tools available to help you track your cycles.
Also, learn to spot the changes in your cervical mucous. Around your peak fertile time, it will have a consistency like raw egg-white. You could also track changes in the feel of your cervix - often high, soft and open during peak fertile times, IIRC. That takes a bit of practice to recognise, though!
I've added some links for you below if you want to learn more about spotting signs of fertility.
Good luck TTC! I hope this is your lucky month.

hi there, yes you would be lucky, me and my girlfriend managed Self insemination 1st time though, and had our 3 yr old and we now have a 7month old concieved on the 3rd try.
so much research has to be right, we wonder how if timing has to be so spot on that all these people have 'accidents' lol.
i tried the early preg tests with both of mine cus we couldnt wait to find out and came up negative, i didint get a positive result till my period was 1 or 2 days late. the percent rate in the leflet isnt very good for accurate results early.
try again if your a day late.
Were just a bout to try again for number 3 so heres hoping for you and us.
xx
dejavu, they wouldnt be too early if the cycle is 28 days it would be 3 days before her period now.

It takes awhile of trying. I took me 5 or 6 months before I became pregnant. And by that time I actually gave up. Don't bring yourself down just because it didn't happen the first time. If you were to become pregnant you would want to be ready and happy. If your stressed that isn't good for you or a baby. Have you missed your period yet, it also might be to early to take a test. Give it another week and if you still haven't had you period then retest. It took me 2 weeks after my missed period to get a positive. Start taking prenatal vitamins and eating healthy. Good luck! if you have any questions or need somebody to talk to you can always email me....... sarah_johnson45013@yahoo.com

Your test might be a couple of days too soon as you might not be producing enough hormones to show up.
It is hard not to get your hopes up. I have been undergoing iVF and have been really hopeful just to be dissapointed.
Hang in there, the waiting is the worst bit but you should know for sure in a few days.

Maybe give it a little more time...depends on where you are in your cycle. Sometimes it takes several weeks to get a positive. Regardless of the result, don't get too disappointed. Just remember how wonderful you will feel when you get that positive and in the meantime take extra good care of yourself and your partner!

yes it was to soon....
the earliest you can find out would be 4 days before you miss your period, with a good test like first response early result.....it is the that has given me a positive before i missed with both of my pregnancies... but the day you miss is the best day to get an accurate result.

I assume you have a man involved in the plan somewhere ?
if not then NO you are NOT pregnant !
EDIT : Thanks to all the twits for the thumbs down but the question AS POSTED when I answered DID NOT include any mention of a donor !
As you DO have a donor, then it's too early to till till around your period is due.

Good luck.
Conceiving a child is pretty easy.
Start with one of you wearing a prom dress. Go out for a few too many drinks - let nature take its course - then several weeks later you should have that bun in the oven.
