Am I alone in lamenting the disuse of spelling and grammar?

Every time I see things like "Wy iz my BF cheeting on me wth my frend!" or "Wut kind of fone do u have?", a little piece of my faith in humanity dies. How can people not care about their writing abilities when it's a direct representation of them? Spellcheck is only a click away!

I agree. Sure we all make occasional mistakes, but much of the writing displayed here is not an unintentional mistakes.

You are definitely not alone. It almost makes me embarrassed to be an American.
Funny thing is, these are probably the same people that say,"omg thees people r like totally in my country and are 2 stooopid to learn the right language!1!!1

Your faith in humanity must be pretty poor if a few spelling errors and abbreviations reduce it so much. And you might consider revising your ideas on grammar: no native speaker, however linguistically challenged, would write 'Wy are boyfrend my cheeting me on my friend with!' or 'wut kind phone u have do?' Why is this? It's because they DO know grammar, intimately, and use it unconsciously, which is astounding. That should arouse our curiosity, because how people do this so effortlessly needs explaining. (And respecting.) So become a linguist instead of a kvetch, it's far more interesting.

I wonder if the person who gave me a thumbs down is able to explain language acquisition?

Get use to it. You are watching the evolution of a new language is evolving. It's the thought behind the words, not the presentation, that matters to me anyway.

well I hate when people write the way you mentioned
but I also hate people who make a big deal about it
like as long as I can easily comprehend it without effort, I don't care

"Disuse" or "misuse." I think some folk don't know any better as opposed to those that just don't care to know any better.
