If I'm using my new MacBook with leopard at home, is the best battery concious choice to run the laptop while plugged in or run it of battery? Whats the best method?

I've been told that if I'm to use the power adapter for extended periods, I should take the battery out, but is this safe?

What you were told is correct. If you're going to use the power adapter for extended periods, remove the battery to preserve its lifespan. Before you do though, make sure it's approximately 50% charged.

If the battery is in, you should run it off battery until the battery runs out, then use it with the charger until the battery is full. If you have it plugged in so you're 'trickle-charging' the battery frequently, it will shorten the battery life.

If you do want to use the power adaptor most of the time, you should remove the battery (which is perfectly safe) so it doesn't suffer from trickle-charging.

you can just leave the battery in. no damage will be done to anything. I keep mine plugged in at home, unless I am moving to the couch or something.
