Roto rooter came after I called a plumber and the town and both said to have someone clean the line. It appears to be either dry wall bc the house was vaccant for so long.. but most likely roots. Im freaking out bc he said something to the effect of having the entire pipe dug up and the roots removed.. trees cut down... and all i can see are dollar signs.. anyone have advice on this...

WHy didn't roto rooter do their job and put a root cutter down the sewer? Makes no sense. Hope you did not pay them if they didn't clean out the pipe. As to pulling out the pipe-- just ahve it roto rooted, and then walk along the line area and determine which trees are causing the prob-- cut them down and your root problem will be over.
Roto rooting the pipe will cut up all the roots and they are then easily pulled out through the access hole.

I live in a 60 year old house surrounded by huge trees. I had someone out to clear roots out of my main drain 2 years ago for less than $200. No problems since.
For a little extra they can snake a camera down to see if the line is damaged and truly needs replacing.
You can pay a thousand dollars or more to have big tree taken down or you can call roto rooter every few years for a couple of hundred$.
Plus you can't put a price on a beautiful mature tree in your yard!

We had the same problem with roots in our system, not sure why you should have it dug up unless one of the roots caved in the line. Don't you have a neighbor or friend that could help cut down the trees?

the poumber can use a cutting tool on the end of the snake to remove the roots but they will eventually grow back and you will have to have this done again

be careful with the chemicals william b suggest. if it will kill the tree roots, it will kill the tree also. having the line replaced would most likely be your best bet, unless you don't want your trees.
