memere gave a bad response-although she is correct about the ingredients being the same, you should stay away from Benedryl and anything with the same ingredients, because although they will make you sleep, they have heavy residual affects, that last a long time for most people, and they are NOT natural. Melatonin is the only natural sleep aid that sometimes helps me, but you need to get a very low doesage of it, so it will not give you residual affects as well. I have tried alot of other over the counter sleep aids, without much luck, so to be honest- you will more thank likely be wasting your money on trying any others.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!

1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.

2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.

The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.

After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net

Ohhh..and Good Luck!

OTC's (over the counter) which i know to work are:-

1. Nitol
2. Deep Sleep

Id rather not take pills though as with every pill theres possible side effects and what works for one person may not work for you. Also if your body gets used to taking these pills to help you sleep you are more than likely to have to depend on pills the rest of your life. Why not try the following:

1. An hour before you go to bed take a warm bath (not hot). You can also add a few drops of lavender essential oil to the water or you can buy relaxation bath soaks.

2. What you wear to bed is also important. Light, loose and comfortable clothing allows you to keep warm and breathe easily.

3. Take with you to bed a warm milky drink of either ovaltine, horlicks, just milk (full fat is best) or drinking chocolate. Drink this slowly when in bed.

4. You can buy an oil burner and while in your bath burn oil of lavender in your bedroom. When you enter your room the room will be scented with lavernder to help ease you off to sleep.

5. NEVER wait till you feel really tierd before you go to bed. If your over tierd this too will stop you going to sleep easy.

6. Read a book or magazine when in bed and dim your lights if possible of use a lamp with a soft light. Reading helps your mind to focus on just one thing rather than any worries you may have about tomorrow.

7. When your eyes feel heavy from reading (or if your dont read) just lay down and then give a good stretch before making yourself comfortable. Turn out the light and close your eyes. Imagine yourself sinking into the mattress and say to yourself (not out loud) "feet relax" and then feel your feet relaxing. work your way up your body slowly. In most cases before you actually get to your head your already asleep.

If your still awake at the end of this then picture in your mind with eyes closed and body relaxed something very calming. Like a waterfall for example. See it as if your dreaming it and your soon drift off to sleep.

IF ALL THIS FAILS YOU MAY ACTUALLY NEED A STRONG MEDICATION FROM YOUR DOCTOR.

Melatonin - it is usually naturally produced by the body to induce sleep. Don't get time release. Take as small a dose as possible to start and work up until you get restful sleep. If a 5 mg tablet, halve it the first night and see how it does. Melatonin will help readjust your natural body clock and get it back to normal. You should be able to stop taking melatonin after a time, when your natural clock is reset (barring other health issues causing your insomnia).

You can also do several other things to aid sleep including: low light in the evening. No excess stress after 7p.m. Don't eat too late. Exercise about 3-4 hours before bed.

don't take sleeping pills they arent good for you. instead look to solving the root of the problem, not just the symptom (the symptom would be not being able to sleep). Try to change your lifestyle to make yourself healthy. Start eating good things, start reducing the stress. But really pills will just mess you up and make you unhealthier. It will give you a million side effects even more than whats written on the box. Drugs are bad for you. Period.

Anything with "diphenhydramine hydrochloride" can be used as a sleeping pill, such as Benadryl. It is the ingredient used in OTC sleeping pills such as Unisom, Compoz, Tylenol PM, Simply Sleep, Sominex.

I would recommend "Calms Forte". It is a homeopathic remedy for insomnia containing passionflower, humulus lupulus, chamomile, and other natural ingredients.

I don't take them all the time but when I do it's Pain Reliever PM. The the Walmart brand (Equate) of Tylenol PM. It's much cheaper and it works fine. I also have arthrirtis so I don't just take it to sleep. My joints ache at night too. Equate also has a sleep aid in caplets. They don't work quite as well but they do make you drowsy enough to fall alseep.

Tylenol PM, Excedrin PM.some folks use Benedryl.
just be careful. and, you should probably ask yourself why you cannot sleep.
The problem may be deeper than just not being able to sleep.
Like heavy drinkers, the drink is but a symptom of something else.

The best one I've ever used (and still do, occasionally) is Unisom. The other ones seem to cause dry mouth. Plus the good thing about Unisom is that you can get the generic equivalent at Wal-Mart and some grocery stores for about half the brand-name price. Good luck.
