The political "sides" have come to be known as on the Left when Liberal, and on the Right when Conservative. Not sure why or how that got started, but maybe Conservatives think they're "right" more than someone with a liberal viewpoint, so considered them to be left of a central stance. That, I really have no clue about.

Left-Liberal
Right-Conservative
Liberals sat on the left, Conservatives on the right of somebody important (the King? I'm not sure). It started in the 1800s and the terms stuck since.
It's also like a crude scale. The farther right or left you go from the center, the more liberal or conservative you are.

Right is conservative and left is liberal.
Both sides have their loonies. I'm left, and I'm far from being off the deep end. There are religious fanatics on the right, and more than a few conspiracy theorists on the left. One can go too far on either side.
