Interesting enough many countries it is the right hand.
For western society they started to put it on the ring finger instead of the middle because of the extra cost of the gold to wrap the larger middle finger.
The diamond concept is also new. Most cultures use a different stone or have a different policy altogether. Though those subcultures are dieing in the west also. American Indians and Gaelic cultures are all stepping in line for Zales marketing strategies and putting the ring on the left hands ring finger.
