Different business models. Limbaugh essentially gives away half of the ad time on his shows to the local stations. It thus becomes pretty cheap programming for local stations, especially since there isn't much out there on radio during the day (non-drive time). That plan was Limbaugh's smart move to get established.

NPR has no commercials, and needs support from a variety of other sources to stay on the air. Government is just one of those sources (foundations, businesses, citizens, etc.). It's not a huge grant, especially by government standards.

It is a lot easier for someone to bash everyone else with a superficial understanding of things and offer little in the way of productive and realistic solutions, and a lot of people want to hear some easy explanation (not necessarily the truth) to jump on the bandwagon and go their merry way. Rush may be publicly "successful," but I think he keeps his personal demons. There are less people who have the intellect, patience and tolerance to hear an in-depth, detailed and truthful coverage of issues. NPR may get government "hand-outs," but a large portion of their funding is donations from corporations and individuals.

Seems odd indeed..and since they do not give a fair and balanced view..their funding should be stopped.
