Yes it can. These people who say different are uneducated and have no clue. The faulty switch can make a partial contact and draw an arc, which will make enough heat to begin a meltdown of the switch and the wires attached to the switch. This will begin to melt or burn the switchbox, {depending on the material it's made from} and the burning mass may burn through the box and drop into the wall cavity. Changing a switch is very easy, and safe if you turn off the power. If you can't do it, get someone who can and do it soon. You'll never forgive yourself for burning down the house over a switch that costs $1.00. Get it fixed today. Don't use it anymore til it's fixed.

I believe it depends on the age of the wiring, but for something to catch fire, wires must short out somewhere. If the switch is faulty (i.e. its just not turning something on), then there probably isnt much of a risk if you just leave it off. But, get it replaced asap because you never know. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Any faulty electrical equipment should be replaced.

It is a risk to you, or your house if you don't.

Likely Not, but it is a possibility depending on situation and breakers. Replace it.
