A. Some can live a very long time.

The large tortoises from the Galapagus Islands can live more than 200 years. Some American box turtle have been documented at over 100 years old. Some sea turtles probably live 75 years or more. The common pet, the red-eared slider, can live 40 years or more if they receive good care.

The typical pet turtle or tortoise will die within 18 months because of a combination of poor cares and diet.

A pet turtle or tortoise with OK cares usually lives for about 5 years.

The well-cared for water turtle will go about 20 years, a well-cared for tortoise can easily hit 40 years old.

Most wild turtles live for about 10-30 years, and tortoises from 25-80 years as far as we can tell- bigger the turtle species, the longer the potential lifespan.

Some wild box turtles have been reliably aged at over 100 years.

Giant tortoises are thought to live for up to 150 years in the wild (based on best guesses). At least a few are known to have been over 150 when they died in captivity.

Some possible world-record tortoises may have hit 220+ years- but they are 'iffy' (bad record-keeping, and out-and-out fibbing are known to have happened with some, for example.)
