I read about that too, it's sometime next year, don't know precisely when. It wouldn't have any effect on Earth, except for Astronomy Buffs would get really excited.

Not exactly it's a 1 in 75 chance, which is to say , something like a 1-2% chance (1.333% specifically), that this asteroid will hit Mars.

Other than being a news story and of BIG interest to astronomers to see what effect it has on the planet, if the effect is small no problem, if the effect is very large or something approaching catastrophic to the weather or geology of Mars, it might be good reason to make sure they find all of the asteroids that are possibly heading towards Earth.

There is just one effect this can have on Earth. This is the way meteoroids can get from Mars to Earth - impact debris from an impact on Mars can be injected into orbits that at sometime will pass across Earth.

This is where the famous one came from that they found a while ago, in which scientists reportedly found evidence of bacteria spores. However, this has never been confirmed and it is most likely the meteorite was contaminated here on Earth.

If this asteroid hits, and it is devastating enough to eject material away from Mars gravity, it could be thousands of years before any of it encounters the Earth.

Your information is correct. See www.astromart.com and www.cloudynights.com for more information and news on this upcoming event.

The asteroid hit will have no effect upon Earth other than distracting a few people from the dangers we all face if
Hillary Clinton becomes the next president of the USA.

Hi - It's not a 1 in 75% chance - it is 1 in 75. I even heard one prediction of 1 in 25.

It will not effect the Earth - except we should be able to see it with telescopes and the surveyor satellite we have orbitting Mars.

It will teach us an enormously valuable lesson - to PREPARE.

We are too inwardly focussed - there are about 6 guys looking for space rocks that might hit us and cause massive destruction - we need to be a lot more serious about this real threat.

KEEP STUDYING SCIENCE!!!

George W. Bush does not respect science. He is the worst President in modern American history.

Thats a very good information right there but I don't think it will affect the Earth at all. Mars will be affected.

The chance is there but minimal.

That is how mars and the moon got some of their craters!

But it takes thousands of years to happen.

It's also possible mars could pick up an asteroid and get a 3rd moon, that is also a possiblity.

Actually the last I heard it was 1 in 25 chance. It is my understanding also that it was going to leave a very big crater if it does. They have not mentioned what this would cause though as far as changing it's orbit or anything. I'm sure they will release that information as the results become clear of what could happen.

Meteorites hit planets all the time, and larger asteroids occasionally hit planets too. If an asteroid hit Mars, it would make no difference to us at all.

Of course it will have an effect on earth, some of our planets in our solar system are shaped and have weird orbits do them being hit or comming across something much larger.

I don't know exactly how it would effect the Earth, but i think it would affect the whole solar system.
