Just like women, men come in all sizes. It is easy to tell when you are gay, but it is very hard to tell if you are straight. So, if you are straight how do you tell?
First if a guy is interested in you, they will not hesitate to make sure you know. Sick or not sick he would be talking to you from a bored bedroom. If you have to do the chasing, then do not waste your time.
Second, there is something called bisexual. There are actual people who 'claim' they are bi. But let me tell you this, there isn't one bisexual person who gets involved with the same-sex and cheat with the opposite sex. It is always a relationship with opposite sex and cheating with the same-sex. This form of cheating is called the dl (down-low) and is quite prevalent professional men. There are issues in a relationship if cheating is happening no matter the sex of the person. The problem is that these people do not feel they are gay or bisexual. Therefore; if you ask the person if they are gay or bi the response will be "no". Won't you be surprised when you catch Johnny and Steve?
Third, ask. If you ask, you will get a response. You might get a lie or an honest answer. But you have to ask. Remember to listen to the answer, carefully. If there is hesitation (gay), a question instead of an answer (gay), no real answer (gay), if they avoid eye contact (gay). Here are some responses that in some form would say he is gay:
1. Do you think I am gay?
2. What? Me Gay?
3. no I am not
4. No (with a bit too much defensive tone)
Finally, nothing wrong with a gay friend. They in fact know straight guys.
Just for a joke, ask him if he saw 'Brokeback Mountain' and what he thought of it?

In today's age it's difficult to tell. Gender roles are blurry, we all have friends that seem gay, but may have the hottest girl in town. Metrosexuals are everywhere. Ask him if he has a girlfriend during casual conversation.

You are over thinking this. Extend your invitation for coffee, when he is well this will likely happen.
Take it from there. If you really like him after that, you can either wait for him to ask you out, or you can ask him out on a DATE.
If he refuses, he is not well yet (he'll call you when he's better if he's interested in you), not interested, or gay (not interested) and you can move on.

I know this might sound stereotypical, but gay men in my experience just behave and look more like women. From their mannerisms to their speech patterns, even to their "soft" pretty looks. I'm not saying all gay men are like this, and yes there are some effeminite men who are straight, but if I was laying bets....

I think the only way you can find out if you ask

ask him if he likes musicals, if his favorite color is purple, if he has a rainbow sticker on his car, if he thought brokeback mountain deserved all of its awards, if he drives a miata, if he has guy friends who have "guy friends", if he wears silk underwear, if he cried during evita, if his adoption of a young child with his gay partner has gone through, if he sips tea with a pinky hanging out, if he loves the mayor of san francisco, or if he watches rocker horror picture show every tuesday at the local cinema...

Your friend has never met him so she cannot have a say in it at all.
