Does anyone else remember those New Year's Eve parties you used to go to with your parents? Have you got good or bad memories of them?

We had some ace parties - even though me and my bro were supposed to be asleep - we used to creep down to the bottom stairs and listen to the adults - my folks used to have friends who were in bands, and they used to crash at our house. They used to come and read us stories, sneak us into the parties, bring us food etc etc - it was cool. Although my parents pretended not to know, we never got discovered, so I guess they aproved really! HAPPY DAYS - love to both my parents (one has left this plane, the other is in the twilight zone due to advanced altzheimer's) - and HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL

Oh, the BEST memories! Every year, one of my dad's frat brothers would have all the brothers and their families to their home for NYE. They had this great house with tons of room. All us kids would hang out up in their attic, play games and have a big ol' slumber party while the adults had their party downstairs. It was a super-nice bunch of people, no one getting all hammered or anything. Just a bunch of really nice people having a great time together. I looked forward to it every year!

Brilliant memories of NY parties. Each year my parents and their mates would take it in turns to host the party. We'd order a monster chinese banquet for about 6pm and about 15 of us would eat. Then other guests would arrive and we;d play daft games, dance and have a laugh. At midnight, we;d go out into the street and sing Auld Lang Syne and normaly meet a load of people from other parties up and down the road. Then those people would get invited back to ours and the party went on....
Fab. Much better then today (and it's not that long ago). Try to get your neighbours interested in singing Auld Lang Syne in the street today and they think your nuts.
I don't understand why people think it's better to pay money to go and stand in a really crowded pub with loads of people they don;t know and then go home ratarsed and £200 quid lighter in the pocket.

Moan over. Happy New Year!

It is not kindness to continue with someone out of pity nor is is kind to keep false hopes alive. Time for some brutally honest acceptance of the facts - for you first and for him second. You do not love him like he loves you and you never will. He deserves someone who can meet his needs and be there romantically for him and you are not going to ever be that person. If you allow this to continue than you are living a lie and that is hardly what best friends do. You owe him the truth - the whole truth and nothing but the truth It is time to cut off all contact for a few months and allow him to heal and yes you are going to really hurt him but there is no way to avoid it - you can, however, accept the blame for not saying something sooner - for allowing false hope to develop. Sometimes the kindest thing you can do is reject someone and yes it is going to make you feel terrible - but you have no alternative. Do not allow anything to stand in your way - this is best for both of you and perhaps the friendship may die but even if that must be it is a price that must be paid - love cannot exist out of obligations, but out of choice or it is meaningless. Some day he will understand this

I wasn't allowed to go with them. My parents were very old fashioned had a strict policy of never socialising with children in tow. So, I promised myself that when I grew up I wouldn't shut out my own children in the same way. We have a lot of fun on NYE - usually I throw a party with good food, music, fireworks, etc. It's an open house and lots of fun for everyone of all ages, as it should be.

We were never taken to New Year's Eve parties. I was fascinated with New Year's Eve as a child & desperate to get out partying. When I finally did it was such a disapointment, lol.

My parents always held a party, great memories of ginger wine, raspberry cordial, scotch broth and black bun !The first foot had to be a dark haired man, bearing a lump of coal, anyone else was considered unlucky .Singing, lots of it, in Glasgow it was Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin songs, memorable sung in glaswegian! and here at home (north Scotland ) a lot of gaelic , c&w, and Irish Folk........the whiskey flowed and us bairns got off with murder ...Slainte Mhath !

I have good memories of ginger wine, tinned ham and salmon.

I remember when all the chairs got set out round the living room so the oldies could have their singsong.

Then getting squeezed in a bed with my Mum, Granny and all the aunties.

God, thanks Elvis, for bringing all that back (coincidently in Paisley ;)
