The last time a meteor hit.

Nothing that happened in modern history is significant.

Only catastrophic events that change the climate and cause mass extinctions matter the most in earth's history.

Mankind is just a blip.....a brief moment in earth's history.

Alot of other great answers though.....like the blue green algae converting CO2 to O2. Good one!

The most important event was the formation of the Earth 4.6 billion years ago, by aggregation of dust particles. Without this, none of the rest would be.

I'd say; When Snowball earth was formed and life "Clung" on just in time, as Volcano's heated up the athmosphere. If this didn't happen not even life would be on earth!, We'd of ended up like Europa! (Jupiter's -Moon)

The development of the blue green algae that started the generation of oxygen from carbon dioxide. This changed the entire chemistry of the atmosphere of the planet. Life, as we know it, requires oxygen.
