A wind-powered seawater desalination system.
You could modify a wind turbine so that instead of driving a generator, it would drive a set of water pumps. One would be a high pressure pump that would force the water through a "reverse osmosis" water filter, thus removing the salt and dumping it back into the sea. The other pump might be a small "pickup" pump to collect the seawater, or to move the fresh water over to a storage tank.
Areas near the seacoast often have strong, reliable winds; wind power has been used to pump water for centuries. However, for various reasons some coastal areas or remote island don't get much rainfall. "Water, water, everywhere; and not a drop to drink....."
This could produce enough drinking water for an entire village. A set of two or three turbines could be used to "drip irrigate" fruit or vegetable crops. By using good engineering and keeping the total number of parts as small as possible, such a system could operate for many years with little maintainance.
