Just the thought of being in a chimney makes me claustrophobic. I bet he tosses his elves down the chute and then tosses the presents down after them.

No I haven't actually seen him do it, and if he did there is no way he would be able to get out of the log fire.
He still manages to get in, and deliver his goodies.
You just need faith he will appear, and appear he will.
