I'm a junior in high school right now and just recently took the ACT. And I didn't do to well. I made a 20 and I thought I would have done better although I guessed a few times at the ends of some of the test because there isn't much time. But anyways, I have a little above a 3.9 GPA. I'm in a few clubs (treasurer in one of them) and played basketball for 2 years. I plan on doing community service with church this summer so I can get community service hours. I have more then enough money so thats not a problem but I just don't know if I'll be accepted. I plan on taking the ACT again but I don't know if I can drastically move my score up. Can I still get in with a 20? (although I know I'll atleast do a little better)

I just went onto their page on the College Board's website to see what they had to say. The good news is that of the students they admitted this year, the middle 50% had scores between 23 and 28, which isn't tremendously high, so you aren't TOO ridiculously far below their average. With your grades, which are above their average, there is some chance you will get in. I would definitely retake the ACTs (and at least study from a prep book beforehand; once you know what to expect, it becomes faster and you don't have to rush at the end), but there is some chance they will admit you. The bad news is that the three things they consider important for admission are the rigor of your high school program, SAT or ACT scores, and your GPA, in that order, so the scores DO matter to them.

Go VOLS!

Okay, I'm sorry I graduated from there in 2005 and I just get a little excited when someone considers UTK...I loved that place.

I would say from what you have listed, that you do have a pretty good chance of getting in. Your gpa is very good, but your ACT is a little offset, which could jeopardize your chances of good scholarships. College is not cheap, so I would suggest taking the ACT once more, and really take it seriously. You have another year and a half to prove yourself.
Email me if you have any questions about UTK and I can tell you about all the hotspots, different places to go, best dorms, etc. It's a great school and I think you made a good choice.

My best guess is that it's iffy. The composite ACT score for the middle half of the most recent freshman class was 23-28. However, you GPA may balance that to some degree.

Consider re-taking the ACT and studying or taking a test prep course before the next one. If you could raise that ACT to a 25, my best guess is that your chances would improve a lot.

Best of luck.

Definitely take the ACT again. Your basketball, community service and club membership should help you -- but definitely take the ACT again.

Call the school and make an appointment to speak with an enrollment counselor. Each school has different things they are looking for.

Retake your ACT however if you are really, really good in basketball or football the low score will not matter.
