I too have severe (almost debilitating) lower back pain, even after two surgeries. It's cut into my riding a LOT, sadly. My advice to you is to test ride different kinds of bikes, because your body will react differently than mine or anyone else's who's submitted answers here. There's no "right" bike, but there is a right bike for YOU.

I had a cruiser several years ago that I had to get rid of because it KILLED my back. Many people are really comfy on them though. So start attending your local bike night and be honest with some folks about what you're doing... some people are real iffy about lending a bike out but many others are not. Offer to have a swap-n-ride on a Saturday with people who own different styles... you need a good hour or so of ride on a machine to see how you feel about it. The group I rode with would sometimes do a "Chinese redlight" in the middle of things just to swap around, for fun... it really is a fun change of pace! Plus any car drivers around would sure look bewildered to see five or six bikes pull up at a stop sign and everybody jump off, grab a different bike, and take off again... LOL

My gut instinct is that a "standard" that's not racing stance but not chopper stance will be the best bet, but really you need to get out there and find out for yourself before you buy.

Good luck man... Sadly I think I'm gonna have to let my CBR 929 go... it just hurts too much to ride it so I rarely use it anymore. After all these years I'm thinking a silly little scooter may be my next bike. My racing leathers are gonna look really screwy on a scooter.... I'm loving the absurdity of it already.

I'd say get a bike that you can get a rider backrest for. I put one on my bike and it's amazing how much more comfortable it is. I can ride 500 miles (800 km) a day and not have any back pain whatsoever.

I too have lower back pain and find that trail type bikes suit me best, I can easily stand on the pegs to stretch. Depending on your average speed a less committed sports bike like a Fazer can also be good, the wind on your chest relieves the weight on your wrists and the more upright position is more comfortable than a racer's crouch.

I am a 54 yo retired paramedic and know about lower back pain after 20 yrs of picking people up, and I spent 60 bucks for a leather kidney belt, and I ride a chopped Harley, best money I ever spent.

You can upgrade the seat on most bikes to a really comfortable one, check out Mustangs "pillow top" seats. but adding a padded back rest sure helps lower back problems. Any of the big cruiser ride nice, my '07 Harley "ultra" classic with it's air ride rear suspension is like riding on a couch at 80 MPH. the big Honda's ride nice, BMW's ride really smooth as well.

Your wrists hurt after a mile? Something isn't right, whether that be the bike fit or your technique. Too much weight on your hands, possibly. Hard to tell without seeing you ride it.

What I have found as I get older, believe it or not, is that riding The ZRX1200 or 1200 ZZR Kawasaki's are the easiest on my back and shoulders. The ZRX for shorter jaunts and the ZX or ZZR's for long distance work. Add a tank bag to the latter and haul ***. If you don't need or want that much power try the SV 650 or Ninja 650 or 600 ZZR.

All the bikes are the same for the riding comfort, so I cannot suggest any, instead get Maruti 800, in which you can get some comfort
